A BRIEF HISTORY OF AMERICAN EAGLES

Share

Here at US Precious Metals, we offer gold, silver, platinum, and palladium silver eagles. The US Mint has been offering these gorgeous coins since 1986, specifically as bullion coins for investors.

The actual history stretches back a bit further. The design on the obverse is the “Liberty” design first created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and applied to the obverse of the $20 Gold Saint Gaudens Double Eagle.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Saint-Gaudens is famed for many works, including an official medal made to commemorate the centennial of George Washington’s inauguration in 1889.

Later, President Theodore Roosevelt invited him to redesign the ten-dollar gold coin, the twenty-dollar gold coin, and the one-cent piece. In addition to designing Liberty, he designed both sides of the $10 Gold Indian Head Eagle and the back of the $20 Gold Double Eagle (in addition to the front). He also proposed a beautiful design for the 1907 one-cent piece, though the coin never got produced.

Unfortunately, Saint-Gaudens died of cancer in 1907, which meant he didn’t get to design any other coins. But his name and legacy live on.

The Birth of the American Eagle

American Eagles are meant to provide investors with a convenient and cost-effective way to invest in physical precious metals. They’re available in numerous sizes; you do not have to purchase a full ounce.

American Eagles resulted from executive plans to sell silver from the Defense National Stockpile, which had a surplus. The sale allowed the Reagan administration to balance the federal budget. At first, only silver Eagles were available.

Numismatic Value

Our coins are high-grade and collector-ready, able to maintain their value for years to come in the event that any year or printing attains numismatic value beyond the melt weight of the bouillon.

Some coins have already made their mark. A 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle can sell for as much as $32,319 because only 30,125 were produced. Each was part of a 5-coin American Eagle Set, all with scarce West Point minting.

Investing in MS-65 American Eagles can deliver returns far and above what you might have anticipated when you first purchased the coin.

There are other examples of American Eagles with a high numismatic value, in spite of the fact that these coins have been in production for less than 40 years.
